By the way - some of you may know this style of music, or indeed this track as 'Niche'. Due to the wonders of naughty file sharers and the internet, Heartbroken has been mislabelled to the point where its original title has been lost in the ether, just to clear up the situation here is a bit of history about the Bassline scene and why the name 'Niche' has come to become synonymous with it.
Bassline is really a catch all word for three quite different styles of music that have one thing in common and have evolved to be played together. They are Organ Bassline House, Speed Garage and 4x4 Garge. The common factor is that they all have deep, driving bass noises as the key melody in the music. Soulful vocals, MC and ragga vocal samples, gunshots, guitars and pianos can be found added in varying quantities across the different genres but bassline became the name that everyone uses because the of the energetic bass riffs. Tracks of the ilk that you may be familiar with include Robin S - Show Me Love, Double 99 - Ripgroove, 187 Lockdown - Gunman and Barkin Brothers - Gordons Groove.
So what's Niche? At the end of the nineties, the mainstream dance world was engrossed in super saw riffs and reaching for the lasers. The speed garage that had dominated for a while was supposedly dead and buried, but in a certain club in Sheffield, it was far from it. That club was called Niche. Over the following years the clubs musical style defined what we now know as Bassline. Other clubs also started popping up in Leeds, Bradford and Birmingham playing a very similar mix of music, but due to the popularity of the club and its tape packs the name 'Niche' became interchangeable with the name of the style of music. It's actually quite hard to define what is Bassline easily, but it could be said that the people that are into it share a common love of silly bass riffs - be they influenced by house beats, or 4x4 garage.
Heartbroken has been one of the biggest tracks on the Bassline scene in recent years and has now crossed over and become one of the biggest dance tracks of the year! More Bassline coming from AATW very soon...
